The New York Synthetic Biology Association currently performs experiments to examine metagenomic environmental sampling and engineering radiation-resistant organisms capable of surviving in space and other extreme environments. By finding genes with increased expression after radiation treatment, they hope to identify proteins that may be able to protect cells from ionizing radiation and other hazardous conditions such as desiccation and extreme heat. The SPECTROstar Nano will be used to measure DNA and protein concentrations, protein expression levels via the beta-galactosidase assay, and cell growth assays of E. coli expressing these proteins.
