Using the SPECTROstar Nano for high throughput assessment of HAase activity

May 24, 2012

Identified in venoms from different animal species, Hyaluronidase enzymes (HAase) are thought to assist in the toxicity of the venom by helping the venom to spread and penetrate tissue faster.

Using the SPECTROstar Nano, this study will try to identify any relationship between the severity of the bite or sting and the HAase activity. Using an assay developed in house (Arthropoda and Serpentes Venom Discovery Array (VDA, Venomtech limited)), a high throughput assessment of HAase activity will be accomplished by measuring absorbance at 490 nm using the SPECTROstar Nano (BMG LABTECH). This can be used to determine the relationship between venom HAase activity and the severity of clinical symptoms. In addition, HAase inhibitors could influence emergency treatment of envenomation victims.
