Use of SPECTROstar Nano to examine specific interaction between olfactory proteins and small lipophilic molecules

Dr. Jing-Jiang Zhou has proposed to use the SPECTROstar Nano to aid in the investigation of the olfactory system animals, which is otherwise known as the sense of smell.

Animals respond to other animals or other organisms in their environment and one way this is done is through volatile semiocompounds (small lipophilic molecules) that as signals, without necessarily having a physiological effect. Examples of such molecules are pheromones that are released to attract the opposite sex or allelochemicals that act as attractants or repellents for different insects.


The SPECTROstar Nano is proposed to be used to investigate the genes and proteins involved between insects and these semiochemicals. Specifically, the interactions between small lipophilic molecules with odorant binding proteins (OBPs) will be investigated. The peripheral perception of odorants and odorant receptors that are necessary for triggering specific behavioral responses will also be investigated. The many different features of the SPECTROstar Nano will be used to aid in this research.
