Which BMG LABTECH microplate reader is right for me?

With so many microplate readers to choose from, how do I know which plate reader will fulfill all of my current and future needs?

Read on to find the most important questions you need to consider when choosing your next BMG LABTECH microplate reader.

High-throughput screening or life science?

This is the first question you need to ask. If speed is important, or if you need to measure low levels of detection, then the PHERAstar FSX high-throughput screening plate reader is probably what you need. If speed is not so important, you might be best choosing a cheaper life science reader.

Which detection mode(s)?

If you know that - at least for the time being - you only need to measure in one detection mode, such as absorbance or luminescence, then you might want to consider a SPECTROstar Omega or LUMIstar Omega, our dedicated absorbance and luminescence readers respectively.

The Omega series readers also come with multiple detection modes: the FLUOstar and POLARstar Omega offer up to eight detection modes - as do the PHERAstar FSX and the CLARIOstar.

What about flexibility?

If flexibility is your main priority, for example in assay development, you might want to consider the CLARIOstar: as well as filters and a UV/spectrometer, this multimode microplate reader offers LVF Monochromators™. This allows you to measure any wavelength (320 to 850 nm) and any bandwidth up to 100 nm without having to purchase expensive filters.

What about my future needs?

You don’t need to worry about your needs changing in the future: with the exception of the SPECTROstar Nano absorbance reader, all BMG LABTECH instruments can be equipped with additional detection modes at any time.
