Luminescence Microplate Readers (including BRET)

Luminescence detection can be performed on the PHERAstar® FSX, CLARIOstar®, and the LUMIstar®, FLUOstar®, and POLARstar® Omega plate readers. All of these microplate readers are certified for Dual-Luciferase Reporter assays (DLReady®) and utilize luminescence-optimized low-noise PMT (photomultiplier tube) detectors which provide a dynamic range of > 9 decades. All readers can be equipped with high-precision reagent injectors.

Luminescence Overview

Luminescence detection is the measurement of the light emitted as a result of a chemical or biochemical reaction induced by an enzyme on its substrate; no excitation energy is required. According to its kinetic, luminescence can be divided in flash and glow reactions. Flash luminescence gives off a very bright signal for a very short amount of time, usually seconds. Glow luminescence can last for several minutes, but usually emits a less intense signal. BRET (Bioluminescence Resonance Energy Transfer) is a dual reporter luminescence detection assay based upon resonance energy transfer between a bioluminescent donor and a fluorescent acceptor. As the donor emits photons by bioluminescence, fluorescence excitation is dispensable.
